Al-Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo showed a great deal of sportsmanship as his side played out a goalless draw with Persepolis on Monday.
The Riyadh giants were hoping to secure Group E’s top spot in the AFC Champions League and knew at least a point would be enough at home against Iran’s Persepolis.
The hosts entered the game in good form having defeated Al-Akhdoud 3-0 last week, thanks to a sensational double from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Head coach Luis Castro made several changes to his lineup, most notably including the return of both Sadio Mane and Aymeric Laporte.
The game had a fast start as Al-Nassr looked to find the early breakthrough from a swift move that ended with Ronaldo earning his side a penalty after two minutes.
However, the 38-year-old was quick to point to the referee that he wasn’t fouled, urging the latter to go back on his decision and chalk off the spot-kick.
As a result, the official went back to the monitor for a short VAR check to verify Ronaldo’s call and decided to bring the ball back for a goal kick.
Al-Nassr were dealt a blow just minutes later as they were reduced to ten men with Ali Lajami receiving a straight red card for violent conduct.
Despite sustaining pressure for most of the game, Al-Nassr had one huge chance to take the lead in the 57th minute as Ronaldo’s turn and shot just went wide.
The Portuguese also gave Al-Nassr fans a scare as he had to leave the pitch with an injury late in the game after receiving treatment.
The result meant that Al-Nassr now lead their Champions League group with 13 points and will turn their attention to domestic matters as they meet rivals Al-Hilal on Friday.
