Al-Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo talked about the impact of his move to the Saudi Pro League and how he inspired the growth of the competition.
After Ronaldo’s shocking move to Al-Nassr back in January this year, a number of high-profile talent in European football followed the Portuguese’s footsteps.
The summer transfer window saw 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema complete a sensational move to Al-Ittihad while arch-rivals Al-Hilal acquired Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain for £86.3m.
With Saudi clubs spending almost one billion pounds in transfers during the last two months, Ronaldo believes more major deals will take place in the future and hopes to continue inspiring the league’s revolution.
“I am very proud to be part of the Saudi Pro League representing Al-Nassr,” Ronaldo said in Portugal’s press conference during the international break.
“I still say as I said six months ago: everyone thought I was so crazy about this move. But after all, it isn’t so crazy any more.
“Players moving to Saudi Arabia has now become normal. I only hope to continue developing this league into one of the best competitions in the world.
“I knew this was going to happen. It’s a privilege to change a culture not only of the country itself but also in what concerns the game. Having great players heading there is something that makes me extremely proud.
“It’s normal for people to criticise the league. Every league has its share of criticism. There is no place that is free of problems or controversy.
“Why not give them [Saudi Arabia] an opportunity if they have the potential to acquire great players, and want to have one of the best leagues in the world.
“I was the pioneer and I feel proud of it. I want the Saudi league to continue to evolve in the upcoming years to become a top league,” he added.
The 38-year-old also reflected on his long-term rivalry with Lionel Messi and said: “We shared the stage for 15 years. I won’t say we’re friends, but we respect each other.
“The competition with Messi was good, and the fans loved it. If you love Cristiano, there’s no need to hate Messi. Both of them have changed the course of football history and deserve respect.
“The competition between us is over and I think both of us are doing well in our respective leagues.”
