Former Real Madrid and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho admitted his interest in joining the Saudi Pro League.
The summer transfer window saw a number of Europe’s biggest stars move to the Middle East and follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Neymar, Karim Benzema, Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino, Aymeric Laporte, and Sadio Mane all headlined the revolutionary summer with clubs managing a combined net spend of over £750 million.
It seems that Mourinho could be the next signing with the Portuguese asserting that he will make the move in the future.
The 60-year-old also spoke about Ronaldo’s influence and how the five-time Ballon d’Or winner paved the way for more stars to join Saudi clubs.
“My conviction is that I will work there [Saudi Arabia] someday,” Mourinho told MBC Masr. “I don’t know when but I will.
“But for now, I am fully committed to Roma and I will give them everything until my last day here. No one knows what will happen in the future but it’s something that I’m going to do for sure.
“I have already been there on two different occasions, one was with Inter and we went to Riyadh. The second time I went to Jeddah and it was great.
“I am not saying this because he’s Portuguese but I think he [Ronaldo] is real. I think the fact that Cristiano was the first one to go gave it a completely different perspective.
“There was a time when people could say that this is a one-man show and it will be just him but certainly in the summer people understood that everything was really changing.
“Lots of players, not just ones in the last period of their careers, but also players in the best years of their careers were coming,” he added.
It’s worth noting that Mourinho’s current contract in Italy runs until the end of the season and a potential move to Saudi could be taking place next year.
